I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the manufacturer is pretty pleased with our design and installation of herb walls for Pizzeria Mozza. Good, because we’re pretty pleased too!
Check out their blog posting HERE. Thanks Chris & Jon!

What about excess water run-off and damage to the interior walls?
Hi Richard – Thanks for reading our blog, and…good question!
At our facility’s herb wall trial and demonstration, we have the irrigation rate pretty well dialed in. So when we install a new herb wall, we’ve got a good idea of what the rate of irrigation needs to be, plus, we usually err on the side of caution. Of course, each wall is different in terms of how much water it needs, based on its sun to shade ratio, plant palette, etc. And we do follow up with a few complimentary maintenance visits to ensure the proper irrigation rate once the plants are acclimated. At the Pizzeria, most of the water trickles down the units and gets absorbed in its entirety. Because this is an exterior application, excess water or condensation, if any, is just absorbed by the shrubs underneath – something that works for this site. And between their facility staff, and our regular maintenance visits, we will adjust irrigation to account for changes in season as well.
As for the interior walls, the modules themselves do no sit flush with the exterior wall. There is a bit of spacing between the wall, the framework and the modules. Just to be safe however, we applied a couple coats of an exterior waterproofing before installation. As living wall and green roof contractors, we’re very sensitive to maintaining structural integrity!
Thanks!
Any recommendations on a company in the NW (ideally Seattle) that could do something similar?
Hi Travis!
Have tool belt – will travel!!!
We’ve got a wonderful nation-wide network and can have a local company help with installation and maintenance. Since we’ve done a number of these projects (and it’s a relatively new concept so not many others have), we suggest working with us to design and specify your project. We can do this from afar, as long as we can get lots of pictures, accurate descriptions and measurements of your space, etc.
From there, to ensure a successful project, we’d send one of our supervisors to oversee the installation. Yes, you would incur travel costs for our supervisor, but the benefit of having an experienced supervisor on site would outweigh the investment!
